What is the Innovator Founder Visa UK?
The UK’s Innovator Founder visa is for Applicants who have a business idea and wish to set up and run an innovative new business, and eligibility depends on the Applicant’s company meeting three key criteria: the business must be innovative, meaning it is completely different from everything else in the UK market; it must be viable, with real potential for growth into both national and international markets; and it must be scalable, requiring the Applicant to show adequate evidence of an achievable and realistic plan to grow the business. The benchmark for qualification is very high, but for those who can meet it, this visa offers an excellent route that can lead to Settlement after three years, and many applicants choose to work with an innovator founder visa UK solicitor to strengthen their application.
Who is eligible for the Innovator Founder Visa UK? Guidance from an Innovator Founder Visa UK Solicitor:
Anyone is eligible to apply for an Innovator Founder visa, whether they intend to come to the UK specifically to start their business or are already in the UK on a different visa category and wish to switch into the Innovator Founder route, although certain forms of temporary leave are expressly excluded from switching. All Applicants must be aged 18 or over at the time of application, and they must be able to show that their business proposal meets the strict requirements of the route. Because the criteria are demanding and the evidential burden can be significant, many Applicants choose to work with an Innovator Founder Visa UK Solicitor to ensure their eligibility is clearly demonstrated and their application is as strong as possible.

What is the Innovator Founder Visa UK endorsement process?
The Innovator Founder Visa UK endorsement process involves two distinct stages, beginning with endorsement and followed by the visa application itself. Endorsement is the crucial first step, as an approved endorsing body must assess the Applicant’s business idea to confirm that it is innovative, viable, and scalable. This assessment typically involves submitting a detailed business plan, supporting evidence, and attending an interview or clarification meeting so the endorsing body can fully understand the proposal and the Applicant’s role within it. Only once endorsement has been granted can the Applicant proceed to the second stage, which is the formal Innovator Founder Visa UK application submitted to the Home Office, where immigration requirements such as identity, English Language ability, and financial criteria are also reviewed. This two‑stage structure ensures that only high‑quality, credible business ideas progress through the route, maintaining the integrity and purpose of the Innovator Founder Visa UK.
How do I secure endorsement for the Innovator Founder Visa UK? Insights from an Innovator Founder Visa UK Solicitor:
The first stage of the process is for an Applicant to seek endorsement for their business idea from one of four approved endorsing bodies. Endorsement is an extremely challenging process, as the endorsing body will need to make sure the Applicant has the appropriate skills, qualifications, and experience they assess as necessary to start the business.
Application for endorsement is by way of an application form to one of the approved endorsing bodies. An assessor will review the information and hold a fifteen-minute telephone call with the Applicant to discuss further. If that goes well, the Applicant will be invited to submit their business plan; supporting evidence; and evidence of their identification, immigration status (if applicable), education, and supporting references. They will then be invited for a thirty-minute Question and Answer session with the endorsing body where the Applicant will be interviewed on the contents of their business plan. If successful, the Applicant will then be officially endorsed and provided with the letter of endorsement necessary to support their visa application.

What are the requirements of the Innovator Founder Visa UK?
The endorsing body will need to be convinced that the Applicant has a robust and detailed business plan that covers the first three years of the business; that the Applicant has secured sufficient funding to launch the business; that they have funding streams in place to run the business for the lifespan of the business plan; that they have conducted detailed market research into the business area they are launching in; and that they have secured expressions of interest or confirmed orders from clients.

How long is an Innovator Founder Visa UK valid for?
If successful, an Innovator Founder visa will grant the Applicant Leave to Enter and Remain in the United Kingdom for a period of three years, providing a valuable opportunity to develop and scale their innovative business. During this time, it is essential for the visa holder to comply with all ongoing requirements attached to their endorsement. In particular, they must attend mandatory check‑ups with their endorsing body at both the 12‑month and 24‑month stages to demonstrate satisfactory progress and continued viability of their business venture. Failure to meet these obligations may place their endorsement and therefore their immigration status at risk. For tailored guidance throughout this process, many applicants choose to work closely with an experienced Innovator Founder Visa UK Solicitor, who can help ensure all compliance duties are met and the path to settlement remains on track.
How can an Innovator Founder Visa UK Solicitor help me with my application?

Frequently Asked Questions
Dependants are permitted on this visa route, allowing successful Applicants to be joined in the UK by their spouse or partner and any eligible children. While friends cannot be included as Dependants, family members who meet the Home Office criteria can apply to accompany or join the main visa holder, giving them the ability to live, work, and study in the UK. Understanding the specific eligibility rules and documentation requirements is important to ensure a smooth application process for each dependant. Many Applicants choose to seek guidance from an Innovator Founder Visa UK Solicitor, who can provide clear advice on the dependant criteria and help prepare strong, compliant applications for the whole family.
If an Innovator Founder visa holder’s business fails or they lose endorsement, their immigration status is put at significant risk. As part of the conditions of grant for this visa route, Innovator Founders must conduct at least two review meetings with their endorsing body (usually at the 12- and 24-month stages). At these meetings, the endorsing body will review business performance measured against the forecast in the original business plan. While the endorsing bodies acknowledge that the growth of a business is rarely straightforward or linear, they will expect to see some measure of progress in line with what has been forecast in order to continue endorsement.
Innovator Founder visa holders become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain after three years on this route. By completing the two mandatory progress check-ups with their endorsing body, the Innovator Founder usually remains on track to apply for Settlement at the three-year point. While the criteria to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain on this route are significant, the endorsing body should advise and assist the Innovator Founder at both of the check-up reviews, helping to keep them on the path to Settlement.
If an Innovator Founder does not look like they will be able to comply with the requirements for an application for Indefinite Leave to Remain, they have the option of applying for further endorsement or switching to a different visa type.
Most applications for this visa type fail at the endorsement stage. Feedback from the four approved endorsing bodies has highlighted most endorsement refusals occur due to a lack of detail in the business plan. It is imperative that any Applicant for this visa type produces a detailed and robust business plan that they know thoroughly and can talk about every stage of development planned for the three-year lifecycle of an Innovator Founder visa. Similarly, applications for endorsement fail because the Applicant hasn’t convinced the endorsing body that they have conducted sufficient market research into the product, or that they have the experience and skills to deliver on the idea.
If you have an idea for a new business that is genuinely innovative, scalable, and commercially viable, the first step is to speak with OTB Legal, and we would be delighted to guide you through the full application journey. This includes helping you understand the endorsement requirements, preparing a robust business plan, and ensuring that your concept meets the Home Office criteria. Applying for this visa can feel complex, but with the right support, the process becomes far more manageable. Many Applicants also choose to work alongside an experienced Innovator Founder Visa UK Solicitor, who can provide tailored legal insight and help strengthen each stage of the application, from initial concept development through to final submission.
