In a welcome development, the UK government has introduced important changes to the British citizenship process for Irish nationals living in the UK. The British Nationality (Irish Citizens) Act 2024 introduced a new pathway to British citizenship for Irish nationals living in the UK. The Act adds Section 4AA to the British Nationality Act 1981, creating a simplified registration route for Irish citizens who meet certain residency requirements
Irish citizens have always had a special status in the UK under the Common Travel Area (CTA) which includes the right to live, work, access healthcare, and vote. Irish nationals are treated as being settled in the UK under the Immigration Rules, even when no application has been made.
However, as of 22 July 2025, there has been a change to citizenship laws which also now simplifies the process for Irish nationals to become British.
What’s Changed in British Citizenship for Irish Citizens?
Irish citizens living in the UK are not required to apply for indefinite leave to remain in order to apply for naturalisation. Instead, they can apply for British citizenship based solely on their UK residence, provided they meet the standard five-year residency requirement
In addition, they are not required to demonstrate knowledge of the English language or sit the Life in the UK Test. As with all applicants, they must meet the good character requirement.
Why Is This Important?
- Simplifies the naturalisation process for Irish citizens
- Removes administrative and financial hurdles
- Acknowledges the unique rights of Irish citizens under UK law
Key Points:
- Applies only in the UK
- Irish citizens must still meet other naturalisation criteria relating to absences and good character
- No need to apply for ILR or Settled Status beforehand
- No need to pass the Life in the UK Test
The Home Office application fees are £723 for an adult and £607 a child. Whilst still significant, these fees are far lower than the normal fees for naturalisation for adults.
This shows a clear recognition of the deep, historic ties between the UK and Ireland, and makes it easier for Irish nationals who have made the UK their home to become British citizens.
Irish nationals who have lived in the UK for five years or more are strongly encouraged to review this new route and consider whether registration under Section 4AA may be the right path for them.
