July 2023 has been an eventful month for changes in the UK’s Immigration Rules. In July 2023, the Home Office unveiled two pivotal statements, offering both clarity and new guidelines on the new immigration rules. Let’s delve into the most significant updates.

Additions to the Visa National List

As of 19th July 2023, nationals from the following countries will need to apply for entry clearance before traveling to the UK for less than six months:

  • Dominica
  • Honduras
  • Namibia
  • Timor-Leste
  • Vanuatu

However, there's a grace period: those with confirmed bookings before 19th July 2023 can travel visa-free till 16th August 2023.

Student UK Immigration Rule Changes

From 1st January 2024, most international students can no longer bring dependants to the UK, with exceptions for those pursuing specific higher degrees such as, a PhD.  Furthermore, students must complete their studies before switching to work routes, like the Skilled Worker or International Sportsperson routes. However, there are nuances based on the level of study and the job route in question.

Expanding the Shortage Occupation List

Effective from 7th August 2023, certain jobs in the construction and fishing sectors will be added to the Shortage Occupation List. This list recognises roles that have low local expertise, making it easier and more affordable for immigrants to apply for these roles. Notably, occupations like bricklayers, roofers, carpenters, and specific roles in fishing, among others, are now included.

Automatic Extension of Pre-settled Status

Starting in September 2023, those with pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) will automatically get a 2-year extension if they haven't transitioned to settled status. This is a proactive measure to ensure no one loses their immigration status unintentionally.

Modifications to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) and EUSS Family Permit

The rules for the EUSS will undergo changes to enforce the deadline for an EUSS application more strictly. Furthermore, from 8th August 2023, the EUSS Family Permit will no longer accept new applications under the 'Surinder Singh' and 'Zambrano' routes. Those on these routes or with a permit from an application made before the 8th can still come to the UK and apply to the EUSS
